In Brief
Challenge
The Courier's 30-year digital and print archive was scattered across outdated CMS versions, local hard drives, and physical binders. Journalists wasted time re-reporting stories that had already been covered.
Solution
Arty connected to the Courier's existing CMS and local file storage, indexed all content regardless of format or age, and made it queryable via a simple chat interface available to every journalist.
Approach
Arty ingested the full archive across all CMS versions and formats, creating a unified, conversational interface. Journalists can now ask 'what have we written about the planning dispute on Oak Street?' and get a full history instantly.
Outcomes
25,000+
Articles indexed
60%
Reduction in pre-story research time

"Arty gave us our archive back. Journalists now walk in and within seconds know what we've covered, who we've spoken to, and what angles are still untold."
Decades of stories, finally organised
The Granville Courier had 30 years of journalism locked in silos. Three different CMS platforms, USB drives of scanned print editions, and folders of freelance submissions had never been unified.
Arty worked through the entire archive systematically, tagging articles by topic, people, location, and date — creating a living knowledge base for the newsroom.
Duplicate story research has dropped dramatically since launch. The editorial team has also discovered dozens of long-running local stories that had been forgotten, leading to three new investigative series.
The Courier is now using Arty to help with reader Q&A responses and subscriber newsletter personalisation.
